Service questions
What operators ask us
Who is allowed to install a commercial hood in NYC?+
FDNY requires that installation of range hoods and other required fire suppression and ventilation equipment be performed by a licensed professional. DOB separately requires a mechanical permit, and the filing generally needs a professional engineer’s stamp. We coordinate the job and the filing; the installation itself is performed by the licensed trade.
What permits does a hood installation need?+
A DOB mechanical work permit for the exhaust system, and an FDNY Commercial Cooking Systems permit to operate it afterwards. That FDNY permit costs $70 and an inspector visits annually before it expires. A preliminary inspection and test is required once the system is installed and the plans approved.
How much does a commercial hood installation cost?+
Quoted per kitchen, because the cost is driven by the duct run rather than the hood. A ground-floor kitchen with a short vertical route to the roof is a different job from a below-grade space in a mixed-use building. If there is no existing route to the roof, that is usually the largest single line in a build-out.
Do you clean the system afterwards?+
Yes, and it is the main reason we do installations. The first cleaning interval should be set from what the system actually looks like after about 90 days of service, not from a default on a contract. Installing it means we know the duct run, the fan and the access points before we ever clean it.
